The British are famous for their satire, history, monarchy, and obsession with manners and tea. While understanding these things is useful, the ability to blend in with a crowd takes a little more effort. London, in particular, has its own rules and cultural norms.

Getting around

Londoners are a busy lot, rushing about from place to place and seemingly impatient with life in general. If you want to fit in with the masses, try not to dawdle on commuter highways and busy streets. Work out where you are going in advance and march stolidly toward it.

Avoid making eye contact with other people on public transport and leave as much room as possible for fellow travellers, whether you are sitting down or standing up. Londoners do not tend to walk anywhere if it is possible to use the tube instead. Get an Oyster card as soon as humanly possible – it will save you a great deal of time and money in the long run and establish you as a true London local.

How to act

Unless you are in a pub or a bar, on the whole Londoners do not tend to strike up conversations with complete strangers. Appearing overly friendly will arouse suspicion, as will constant smiling. Act cool and keep your voice at a reasonable volume (again, unless you are in a pub). Also try to avoid complaining or making unreasonable demands when in public.

Londoners, like the rest of the UK’s residents, form orderly lines when waiting for buses and other services. Never cut in front of others in the queue.

Meeting people

Most Londoners meet people through work or through friends of friends. With this in mind, accept all the social invitations that you can. It is fine to be friendly once you have been introduced to someone – just do not delve too deeply into your personal life straight away. Londoners like and expect a little bit of banter to start with.

As those studying English courses in UK language schools will admit, London is sometimes too much of an exciting place to live. There is so much going on that it is easy to find yourself going out every night of the week and spending vast amounts of money. Do not be afraid to cite lack of funds if too many social invitations roll in – Londoners understand only too well the high cost of inhabiting their city.

Where to go out

Going to the pub is a standard procedure. Londoners may visit one straight after work, or arrange to meet in one later in the evening. If you go to the pub and the people you are with offer to buy you a drink, it is expected that you will return the favour. The rules for queuing do not really apply to pubs – especially the ones that get very busy. Prepare to jostle for position to reach the bar. Once there, it is polite to allow others who have reached the bar before you to order first.

More sedate and culturally rewarding activities include attending the many opening nights for art exhibitions around the city. While some of these are invitation only, many are open to all and can be a good way to meet other people.
Those students who are enrolled with language schools such as www.esl.co.uk can join in on the many social outings to museums and attractions around the city such as the London Eye. These meetings are good for making friends with other language students and for learning more about the city.

It’s possible to feel like an ant in London sometimes. With its underground networks and the constant crowds, there are people everywhere and the buildings around you seem to shoot skywards, making you feel tiny by comparison.

But many people do not realise that it is possible to see the city from a new perspective: looking down on it from above. Become a bird for a day with these aerial options for seeing the metropolis.

You can play a life-size version of Monopoly, collecting Mayfair and Piccadilly, taking in the green spaces of Hyde Park and Regent’s Park on the way. Or become an action hero, leaping from a plane to save the day, or a billionaire in their private helicopter – the choice is only limited to your imagination.

Helicopter tours

Leave traffic behind and forget sightseeing bus tours: you can check out London’s major landmarks from the lofty vantage point of a helicopter. While it lacks the hop on, hop off capability of a bus tour, you probably won’t mind too much. If you’ve ever wanted to look into the backyard of Buckingham Palace, helicopter rides might be your only opportunity. With the helicopter’s unique ability to hover, it can linger at the most interesting locations, and zip between them with ease.

Helicopter flying lessons

For anyone who has ever imagined playing James Bond, then piloting a chopper across urban sprawl with helicopter flying lessons might be a dream come true. Taking a step further, you can actually take control of the thrilling vehicle. Harnessing the extraordinary energy of this metallic bird, it will be a truly unique experience.

Aeroplane tours

Here’s a plane journey you don’t need a visa stamp for. Nor will you have to worry about luggage allowances and guidebooks, as you’ll end up where you started – the journey is also the destination. Getting at eye-level with the Gherkin and looking down on the Thames snaking through the city, it’s possible to appreciate London town from a distance impossible from any other place.

Skydiving

It takes a lot of nerve to go skydiving, but for many it is a transformative experience that can’t be adequately put into words. Many options are available, including tandem skydiving, which allows you to bypass the training course, or a solo option is available with a training day. Tandem skydiving has the bonus reassurance of having a thoroughly trained instructor, for anyone who is uncertain about jumping out of a plane and hurtling towards earth at 120 miles an hour.

Hang gliding

For those who have always wanted to be able to fly, a birds-eye view will be achieved with a graceful set of human-made wings. Paragliding and powered paragliding are similar options, both utilising the broad wing structure and aluminium frame. This is a more peaceful option than other more motorised options, as you can actually approximate the sensation of unassisted flight.

Bungee jumping

Bouncing away on an elasticated rope may not be everyone’s bag, but the adrenalin rush is hard to pass up for many a thrill-seeker. You can even take a friend or special someone along. You’ll get a raised view of your surroundings before it all becomes a blur as you rush toward.

With the options ranging from mild to thrill-seeker, there’s something for all ages and all levels of dare-devilry. You will get an opportunity to take in the enormity, history and life that the city offers. Checking out Big Ben, the London Eye, The Tower of London and other great landmarks from this angle will be a memory for a lifetime.

After experiencing London from this elevated angle, you can return to earth with a new sense of context, and a sense of the scale of this diverse and vibrant city. Thorough research of the options available will ensure you get the experience that’s right for you, suited to your tastes and budget.

The city of London serves as the capital of the United Kingdom. It is one of the most important cities in the world and is also a very famous destination for travelers. The city of London has played a very major role in international political affairs from medieval times. Today it is a prominent global city and is home to motley groups of people of different races and cultures. The city of London is characterized by excellent shopping, beautiful tourist attractions, a dynamic modern culture and wonderful accommodation facilities. If you are a tourist in the city of London you should make use of the car rental London to enjoy a comfortable exploration of the city.

Accommodation Facilities in London

There are excellent accommodation facilities in the city of London. There are upscale and mid range hotels for high budget travelers in the city as well as hostels and lodges for backpacker travelers. The standard prices per night in the middle range hotels are about twenty pounds. The hostels are usually much cheaper. However, the middle range hotels in the city of London are a more comfortable choice than the hostels because they provide facilities like free breakfast and free laundry services along with reasonable accommodation. There are also quite a number of bed and breakfasts throughout the city of London which are a perfect choice for those having only an overnight stay in the city. There are even many guest apartments in the city which are well known for providing home cooked meals and very friendly, personalized customer service. You can use the airport rental cars in the city for tracking down a suitable accommodation location for yourself.

Sightseeing Destinations in London

The city of London has an abundance of fantastic sightseeing destinations for vacationers. One of the most popular tourist sites in the city is the Eye of London. This is a very large observation point in the city from where you can get a marvelous view of the whole of London. Another well known destination for travelers in the city of London is the Buckingham Palace. This is the residence of the Queen of England. The change of guards which occurs at the Buckingham Palace quite frequently is an activity which travelers generally love to witness.

Thus, the city of London is one of the most enthralling destinations in the whole world.

New York is known worldwide for the number of cultural and fun festivals that take place in the city throughout the year. Whether you’ve already booked your flights to New York, or if you’re simply considering a getaway, it’s worth trying to fit some of these fiestas into your Big Apple itinerary.

Chile Pepper Fiesta
Lovers of all things spicy will enjoy this fall festival, held annually at Brooklyn Botanical Gardens. The Chile Pepper Fiesta celebrates fiery flavours: from chilli flavoured chocolate, freshly grown chillis, and sizzling salsas and chutneys. The day includes events and talks from prolific chilli growers and enthusiasts, all with a backdrop of Latin American music, although the highlight is likely to be the range of delicious samples.

Tribeca Film Festival
Held each April, Robert De Niro’s film festival is becoming a big player rivalling top names such as Sundance and Cannes. For the duration of the festival the lower Manhattan neighbourhood becomes home to red carpet galas, outdoor screenings (no car required), and showcases arthouse films from around the globe.

Shakespeare in the Park
Tricky to get tickets for, but with Hollywood A listers like Al Pacino turning up on stage it’s well worth it. Shakespeare in the Park is currently in its 50th year, and is the highlight of the summer for native New Yorkers and visitors alike. To get a free ticket to the public theatre events, it’s recommended that you start queuing very early. Two days before, early. Be sure to take a friend so that you don’t get lonely.

Jazz Age Lawn Party
Channel your inner Gatsby with a visit to the bi-annual Jazz Age Lawn Party, held by Michael Arenella and his Dreamland Orchestra. Enjoy all the fun of the 1920s without any of the dreary prohibition stuff: expert mixologists are on hand to serve all of your cocktail needs. Join in with Charleston lessons, watch the bathing beauties contest, or simply relax and drink in the atmosphere.

New York Food and Wine Festival
Another must for foodies. The New York Food and Wine Festival is sponsored by the Food Network and features exhibitions hosted by some very famous faces. The event itself is huge, with big wine tasting sessions held by New York’s finest wine merchants and food purveyors. There are also live events that echo their televised counterparts: from the Iron Chef experience to Rock & Bowl with Anne Burrell.

Getting there
Although your dates will be dependent on when your festival of choice is, it’s still possible to find cheap flights year round with a little research. Use the comparison sites and keep an eye on the sales to see when the cheapest deals are available.

London is surely one of the world’s greatest cities; a cultural icon that has some of the greatest museums and galleries in the world which showcase some of the greatest treasures and artefacts on the planet. With hundreds of galleries and museums available to visitors, picking one that is right for you can be a tricky prospect made even harder if you’re trying to fit as many of them in as possible during your stay – especially if you’re only there for a couple of days or less. With this quick guide we look at the best of these options open to you and why you should visit.

1. The British museum is perhaps the King of all of London’s museums and galleries. It is filled with over 4 million artefacts including marvels such as Egypt’s famous Rosetta Stone and the ancient Greek Elgin Marbles. Prepare to be astounded by the sheer scale of some of these exhibits as you wonder through time and history. Ensure you put aside a whole day to explore this place!

2. The National Gallery, situated in Trafalgar square, is the most impressive of all London’s art galleries. This is perhaps the most comprehensive collection of art in the world, encompassing all of the major art movements and showcasing the most famous artists to have ever lived, from Leonardo da Vinci to Pablo Picasso.

3. For a museum that the kids will love, The Science Museum is an absolute must. Learning about science has never been so fun and you and the kids will love the wealth of interactive displays that are on offer here, most popular of which is an exploration of the human body.

4. The Victoria and Albert museum, named after the most famous of Britain’s rulers, is housed in South Kensington and holds a collection of crafts, ceramics and sculptures from all over the world. Many of the exhibits are design-oriented and showcase some of the most modern ways of showing artefacts and is a must-visit for any connoisseur of museums.

5. The Tate Modern is a showcase for the most ground-breaking modern artists. A collection of art based on the banks of the River Thames, this place is worth a visit purely for the spectacle of seeing such an expanse of open space inside such a huge industrial building. The displays here are nothing less than thought-provoking so be sure to enter the gallery with an open-mind!

6. For one of London’s smallest yet most impressive collections, you should head to famous Somerset House on the Strand. Here you will find some of London’s most impressive art housed in one of the finest properties in the city. You enter the collection through an impressive archway and into a peaceful courtyard standing in contrast to the hustle-bustle of the city and traffic that stands just metres away. The comprehensive impressionist collection on the top floor gives even the National Gallery a run for its money.

To maximise your enjoyment in London it’s important to ensure you have the right insurance cover. Finding UK travel insurance is a simple task made even easier with Insure & Away.

It is pretty much a given that Christmas is one of the best times of the year to visit New York City. You will find that the Big Apple is bursting with cheer, filled with joy and there are so many wonderful attractions just waiting to be visited, many for free, that you would be mad to miss out! Below is a list of some of the best things to do for free during the festive season.

Shopping:

Whether you are window shopping or actual shopping you will be blown away at some of the displays that are on offer in New York City at Christmas time. Saks on Fifth Avenue now has an amazing 3D display that sees the entire building being covered with amazing virtual snowflakes, bubbles and anything else that takes their fancy. This amazing light show runs until the 6th of January and is a real delight to the eyes. If you are visiting Saks Fifth Avenue during the day time then you will find that the usual festive window displays are up and you can even see designer pieces on display from the likes of Alexander McQueen and other fantastic designers.

If you visit Barney’s you will find that they now have a Gaga Workshop which sells some truly amazing Lady Gaga inspired and designed pieces with everything from platform shoes to tea cups available here and you will find some stunning gifts for the Lady Gaga fan in your life. The boutique is designed with such beauty and style that even just some window shopping here is absolutely fantastic!

You will find wonderful window displays all over Manhattan, so many that you could easily spend a whole day just looking at window displays.

Visit old St Nicholas (the real one):

When thinking of Christmas films one that always springs to mind is Miracle on 34th Street and this is probably one of the most popular Christmas films of all time. Visit Macy’s to see Father Christmas but be warned that you may have to queue for a while due to the popular of this fantastic grotto. You will find wonderful Christmas displays and even a postbox for sending letters to Father Christmas.

Ice skate out in the open:

Skating in New York City is one of the most fantastic experiences around Christmas time and if you visit one of Manhattan’s fantastic ice skating rinks you will not be disappointed. Central Park’s Wollman is THE ice skating rink to go, particularly if you want the chance to see a movie being shot! Rockefeller Centre, with its giant Christmas tree, is another fantastic place to ice skate, particularly if you are looking for a romantic setting.

The Rockefeller Centre Christmas Tree is one of the best in all of New York City and a visit here will allow you some fantastic photographs and memories that will last a lifetime. The tree this year is over 70 foot and is covered in over 30,000 LED lights before being topped with the ultimate decoration, a Swarovski crystal covered star. If you are visiting Sak’s Fifth Avenue then you will be right near the Rockefeller Christmas Tree so you can even combine a few different activities in one day for the ultimate festive day in New York City.
